How to Wear Flats in the Winter and Stay Warm

Don't put your favorite flats in the closet quite yet. Flats are some of the most comfortable shoe options around — and yes, you can wear them during the winter without sacrificing comfort or style. It just takes a few simple tricks. Once you know how to wear flats in the winter, you'll be able to enjoy your favorite shoes all year long.

Not sure how you'll be able to keep your toes warm in flats? Keep reading for some tips you can use when putting together your winter look.

Add a Fun Pair of Socks

One of the easiest ways to keep warm while wearing flats is to add a pair of socks. Don't be afraid to show off your style by pairing classic black flats with socks that have a fun pattern or cute design. If your flats have patterns or bright colors, you can choose solid neon socks or a more traditional black to keep you warm.

Wear Them With Leggings or Skinny Jeans

One of my favorite ways to stay warm while wearing flats in the winter is to wear them with skinny jeans or leggings. A pair of flats with a medallion or jewel is a great way to dress up an outfit. For those truly cold days, try a pair of moccasins with a lining, or make your own wool insole for your favorite unlined mocs, like in this tutorial from maya*made. When wearing more fitted pants with your flats, choose socks that will extend the color of your hemline and contrast with your shoes to really make them pop. Try black socks with black leggings and a pair of leopard loafers for a fun, stylish look.

Choose Stockings or Tights

Stockings or tights will keep your feet and legs warm with a skirt or with pants as an extra layer of warmth. Depending on the temperature, you may want to wear a lightweight pair of tights, or go with something warmer like fleece or wool. For a casual look, pick a floral pattern or polka dot design. If you want to go dressier, choose argyle, black, or a neutral color. Heavier tights go great with a loafer or Oxford style flat, and a thicker sole will help further protect your feet from the cold.

Add a Pair of Hidden Socks

For a day that is a bit cool but not freezing, a little pair of hidden no-show socks under your favorite dress flats may be just what you need. Hidden socks will keep your toes toasty without showing above the side of your flats. Or, for a cute look, try lace "hidden" socks that allow a tiny bit of lace trim to extend above the sides of your shoes — they work great with scrunch flats.

Go With Flared Trousers

Flared trousers will come down lower on your foot than a pair of skinny jeans. This extra length will leave less of your foot exposed to the elements — which means that flared trousers are perfect for pairing with your favorite flats. If you really want to stand out, choose a pair in a bright color or a splashy pattern.

Once you know how to wear flats in the winter, it opens the door to a lot of different options. Don't feel like you have to pack away your favorite flats with your sandals once summer is over. Use these suggestions to create a brand-new winter look. Even when the snow is deep, you can wear your boots to work and change into your favorite flats when you get there!
