How to Wear Shorts in the Fall

Fall is here! Time to pull out the thick sweaters, dust off your boots, and grab a pumpkin latte — or, if you're like me, you want to gently step into fall, rather than "fall" right into it. I do this slowly, not only in my home decor, but also with my wardrobe. I like to mix a little fall into my summer wardrobe, and ease into the heavier fabrics and layers. My favorite trick is wearing shorts! Read on for a few tips on how to wear shorts in the fall.

Proportion Counts

When you're wearing shorts in the fall, take proportion into consideration. Think thick with thin, tight with loose, long with short. If you have on shorter shorts, try balancing the amount of leg you're showing with a chunky cable-knit sweater on top. If you have on cuffed shorts with a looser pleated fit, maybe wear a more fitted V-neck sweater tucked in and accented with a belt. Try a longer cardigan with shorter shorts for a fun variation.

Classic Fall Fabrics and Patterns

A really easy way to make shorts work in the fall is to get a pair in fall-worthy fabric or pattern. Thick wool, pinstripes, plaid, and houndstooth are all great options. If you're feeling adventurous, try chunky bouclé, velvet, or leather!

In the Thick of It

Adding an element of warmth to your shorts outfit helps to make the style feel more autumnal. My very favorite fall style is to pair shorts with thick cotton tights. Knee-high socks and Oxfords would also be just adorable! You can also keep the lighter-weight summer styles, but transition them to fall by adding layers. Try a wool boyfriend cardigan over a thin T-shirt, or a cowl neck sweater with linen shorts. Be bold and wear a flowy tank top, shorts, and a thicker blanket scarf (Riva La Diva shows you how to make one with just a piece of flannel and a pair of scissors) — the contrast between fabric weights can be really fun!

Give It the Boot

As much as our toes have loved the freedom of summertime sandals, its time to give them the boot — literally! Boots and shorts are a match made in fall-style heaven. Ankle boots, moto boots, wedge boots, and even tall boots work so well with shorts. They all look great with tights, but tall boots would be really cute with frilly knee-high socks.

Fall for Color

One of people's favorite thing about fall is its color palette: deep cranberry, mustard, piney green, rusted orange. Hints of these colors in your outfit give an instant sense of coziness. Whether it's in your tights, your sweater, or even your leather boots, try adding the quintessential colors of fall to your shorts outfit.

Now you know how to wear shorts in the fall! Once you warm up to the idea, be bold and give it a try!
